USDOT Number vs MC Number: What's the Difference?
A USDOT number identifies the carrier; an MC (docket) number grants for-hire operating authority. They answer different questions, and many carriers hold both.
USDOT number
Assigned by the FMCSA to companies operating commercial vehicles in interstate commerce (and intrastate in many states). It's the permanent safety ID — every inspection, crash and audit ties back to it. A USDOT number alone does not authorize hauling freight for hire.
MC / docket number
The MC number is authority to transport regulated commodities for hire across state lines. Private carriers (hauling their own goods) and many intrastate carriers don't need one — which is why plenty of legitimate carriers show a USDOT number but no MC.
Key takeaway
Use the USDOT number to pull the safety record; check for an active MC number to confirm a carrier can legally haul your freight for hire. Look up a carrier →
