FMCSA Operating Authority Types Explained
FMCSA operating authority comes in three main types — common, contract, and broker — and a company can hold more than one.
Common authority
Lets a carrier haul regulated freight for the general public.
Contract authority
Lets a carrier haul under continuing contracts with specific shippers.
Broker authority
Lets a company arrange transportation by other carriers — brokers, not asset-based haulers.
Each authority is separately Active, Pending, or Inactive. HaulAtlas shows which are active on a carrier's profile.
Key takeaway
Match the authority to the job: for-hire freight needs active common or contract authority. See carrier authority →
